Day 3: Kings Canyon
Travel to Kings Canyon today. For the energetic, a guided climb to the canyon rim will be rewarded with magnificent views of Watarrka National Park. Alternatively, you may prefer to explore the boulder-strewn canyon floor, an easier walk. The sheer red rock face of the canyon soars over 100 metres above lush palm forests, sheltering them from the surrounding desert conditions. The park is a conservation area whose rock holes and gorges provide refuge for over 600 species of plants and many native animals. While it was little known to Europeans until recently, the Luritja Aboriginal people have called the area their home for over 20,000 years.
Hotel - 4 star: Kings Canyon Resort, Kings Canyon. (B, D)
Day 4: Alice Springs
Leaving Watarrka National Park behind us we travel through to Alice Springs at the doorstep to the Red Centre. Tour the sights of The Alice. At the Royal Flying Doctor Service you will see how medical aid reaches those who live in the remote outback'. Conclude with a panoramic view of Alice Springs and the surrounding ranges from the top of Anzac Hill. Visit the largest Aboriginal Art Gallery in Australia and learn more about Aboriginal Art. Tonight’s dinner is a special experience in The Alice.
Hotel - 4.5 star: Alice Springs Resort, Alice Springs, 2 nights. (B, D)
Day 5: Palm Valley
We join our 4WD vehicle and specialist Pam Valley Driver/Guide to travel through the West McDonnell Ranges to Hermannsburg, an Aboriginal community and historic precinct which is renowned for its Aboriginal art collection and the works of Albert Namatjira. Then travel down the bed of the Finke River, one of the oldest watercourses in the world into Palm Valley. See spectacular rock formations, white sands and an oasis of rock pools and palm trees. Some plants, such as the cycad and livistona Mariae (cabbage palm) are known world wide as relic plants and are unique to Central Australia. Visit the spectacular rock formation known as the Amphitheatre. On the return journey relax and watch the changing colours of the West McDonnell Ranges in the afternoon light. (B, L)
